Lake Hopatcong
You won’t be surprised to learn that Lake Hopatcong is the largest freshwater body in the state. But did you know that it was man-made? Back in the mid-1700s, a dam was built on the Musconetcong River, thereby raising the water level and joining the formerly separate Great and Little Ponds into one. Plans to name the new lake “Musconetcong Lake” were quickly scrapped for the (slightly) more easily spelled, Hopatcong Lake.
If you’ve got the second largest freshwater body in the state pooling in your backyard, it’s probably time to call for service and have us take a look.
